CIBIO is a Research Unit in biological sciences which conducts basic and applied research on the three main components of biodiversity: genes, species and ecosystems. Since January 2011 CIBIO is part of InBIO - Research Network in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology (Associate Laboratory).

CIBIO is managed by ICETA, a non-profit private institution at the University of Porto that benefits from administrative and financial autonomy. Besides its headquarters in Universidade do Porto, the Center has poles in Universidade dos Açores, Universidade de Évora, Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical and Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação da Huíla (Angola).

CIBIO fosters an international and multicultural research environment, currently hosting researchers from more than 14 countries organized in 18 research groups, which focus their activity on bodiversity and ecology, evolutionary biology and applied ecology.

CIBIO is the main host institution of the Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution PhD, by the Universidade do Porto and Universidade de Lisboa, and the Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution MSc Course, by Faculdade de Ciências do Porto. In addition, it provides various services to the community, including: applied research on evaluation and use of genetic resources; information and assessments for environmental impact studies, habitat and ecosystem monitoring and rehabilitation, and environmental planning; next generation sequencing; and scientific consulting.
